March 2, 2024VRA COMMITS AN INITIAL GHS10 MILLION TOWARDS ALLEVIATING PLIGHT OF IMPACTED PERSONS
In a remarkable display of commitment to humanitarian efforts, the Volta River Authority (VRA) has earmarked an initial GHS10 million to alleviate the plight of individuals adversely impacted by the controlled water spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Hydro-electric Dams. The ongoing spilling exercise, which began over a month ago, has caused flooding in some communities in the Volta, Eastern, and Greater Accra regions.
The VRA’s multifaceted approach encompasses several critical initiatives aimed at rescuing and providing relief to the affected communities. Notable among these are the presentations of essential relief items to the impacted districts. These relief items include bags of rice, sugar, mackerel, and cooking oil, mosquito nets, toiletries among others. These provisions will support the victims in their temporary stay in designated safe-havens.
The impacted districts receiving these essential relief supplies are North Tongu, Central Tongu, South Tongu, Asuogyaman, Shai Osudoku, Anlo, Keta Municipal, Ketu South Municipal, and Ada East. The VRA is determined to ensure that no community is left behind during this challenging period.
Furthermore, the VRA has organized water tankers to consistently provide clean drinking water to the affected residents. Clean and safe drinking water is a fundamental requirement during such crises, and the VRA is taking every measure to ensure this need is met.
In addition to relief items and water supply, the VRA also provides medical resources and personnel to address emerging health issues. A team of medical professionals has been deployed to screen and administer medical treatment to those affected by health-related challenges resulting from the flood.
The VRA has provided buses and pickups to facilitate the transportation of both goods and affected individuals. This support is crucial in ensuring efficient aid distribution and relocation of flood victims.
Acknowledging the significance of restoring infrastructure, the VRA has also repaired the North Tongu District’s damaged water supply system. This action demonstrates the Authority’s dedication to long-term rehabilitation as well as prompt alleviation.
In this challenging time, the VRA is urging the residents of affected areas to cooperate with rescue and relief agencies for the sake of safety and security. The Authority also expresses deep regrets for any inconveniences the spillage has caused downstream.
The VRA’s humanitarian efforts, including the significant GHS10 million initial allocation, demonstrate a steadfast commitment to supporting the flood victims and aiding the affected communities in their journey to recovery.
